History

Comox Valley has a rich history beginning as an agricultural settlement in the 1860’s during the Fraser Gold Rush. Shortly after this, Comox Logging and Railway Company purchased a large block of land form just north of Campbell River to south of Courtenay home to the best Douglas Fir timber. Logging was one of the largest industries in the beginning of the area. Today, Comox Valley is not actually known for the days of the logging industries but of the cultural scene and of course the natural beauty of the entire area.

Culture

Not only will you find all kinds of cultural events and festivals throughout the region but the high schools in the area focus on dramatic and musical instruction known as the Comox Valley Youth Music Centre that brings students from across the globe. Several nonprofit organizations in various towns, hamlets and communities are also devoted to bringing culture to the area and ensuring that music and dramatic education is not lost. In 2007, Canadian Heritage designated Comox Valley as one of Canada’s Cultural Capitals.

Atmosphere

You may not realize this but even though the Comox Valley is one of the largest metropolitan regions in Canada, there are many small towns, rural areas, suburban and urban areas so you have more options to find the atmosphere you wish to call home. Along with this, this region has rather mild climate making it great for families that enjoy outdoor fun year round.

Festivals

Another nickname for Comox Valley is The Valley of Festivals and once you see the long list of festivals you will understand why. A few of the most popular festivals include Big Time Out, Showcase Festival, Comox Nautical Days, Hornby Island Festival, Marina Park Main Event, Comox Valley Shellfish Festival, and North Island Hot Jazz Festival.
